missy raines...

For some musicians, ringing in new changes on familiar sounds is enough. For bassist Missy Raines, though, it's a different story. Though she's achieved acclaim in the world of bluegrass, including seven IBMA Bass Player of the Year awards, her horizons have always been broader, and in the missy raines and the new hip - more than a decade in the making - she's at last created a group in which she can unleash the full range of her creativity.

has toured and recorded with well-known bluegrass veteran, Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike, and with the edgy, acoustic-roots group the everybodyfields. She was featured on the 2006 IBMA Recorded Event of the Year-nominated release, “Back to the Well - Women in Bluegrass” on Blue Circle Records.

Megan is a featured guitarist in the September/October 2006 issue of Flatpicking Guitar magazine. The magazine's founder, Dan Miller, is clear about her talents: “I predict that she will not only be a role model for young female players, but for all guitar players regardless of generation or gender.”

Megan comes from musical stock. Her grandparents, Chuck and Norma Bell, are in the Western Swing Hall of Fame and toured professionally for 30 years all over the US. Megan’s mother is a drummer and her father's a guitar player - her family was literally saturated in music. Born in Idaho and later moving with her family to Alaska, Megan started playing guitar at 10 years old when her grandmother taught her “Little Brown Jug”, the first song taught to each member of the family. By the 7th grade, Megan had started a Blues/Funk band. Particularly drawn to roots music, she began studying the genre during her time in Alaska and began composing music for the acoustic guitar.

Now an accomplished writer, singer, and guitar player, Megan’s dynamic sensitivity and musical maturity belie her young age of 21. “Music directs my life…” says Megan and it’s clear she knows exactly what direction that is.
